Experienced Points - 6/8/2021

D. Paul Harrison, 08 June 2021

I’ve been relaxing by fixing some styling and adding newsletter support to this blog (coming tonight, assuming this one tests out okay), which is weird. I have a lot of trouble splitting hobbies from work, which I guess is why I’ve gotten paid for so many hobbies.

I lived in video games, and I started my career in the video game industry. I loved computers, so I then went into IT. I love books and TV, so I write those. It makes sense, but I always wonder if I need to focus, or if I am doing the right thing by being platform-agnostic. I guess time will tell - all my write-heroes are people who do a lot of things, but that wasn’t because they set out to do this, but rather, they moved to other things when the opportunity presented itself.

What I’m writing

1500 word flash fiction story

Haven’t quite narrowed down a concept yet. There’s no deadline on this one besides a self-imposed one, which is next Monday.

Voice in the Darkness: 10,000 word short story (Current count: 0)

Finishing this outline tonight, gonna try to do it scene-by-scene.

Half-hour TV pilot, submitted to a pilot contest without any further edits. This is a mistake, but the more eyes and feedback I have, the better. I mean, I hope.

What I’m reading

Still no books

Re-reading some random stuff, nothing significant. Gonna dive back into that Stan Lee book tonight.

Uncanny X-Men by Kieron Gillen, Greg Land, Carlos Pacheco

Continuing my X-Men reads and re-reads, this part is utterly fantastic. A lot of things that led into the current run of X-Men are here, and occasionally even the dire pen of Greg Land and his weird poses can’t ruin my enjoyment of it.

This was the main X-book I was reading during the Phoenix Five era, and is probably why I have a better remembered opinion about it than others. This was the book that dove deeper into the psychology of the characters during big super-hero battles, sometimes very literally. There’s a sequence where Scott and Emma have a psychic dinner in the middle of a fight, and I love that concept. It couldn’t be done in any other media than a tie-in to an event, and it makes perfect sense for the characters.

What I’m playing

Sea of Thieves

Haven’t gotten too deep into it, but am playing with some friends tonight, and looking forward to it. I get an impulse to play a multiplayer game every time I really think about science fiction - gotta HACK my AVATAR into the METAVERSE, I LIVE IN THE FUTURE - and this seems like a good one to do this with.

That’s about it for now, not sure if I’m really gonna share these ‘til I get the newsletter up, or just keep journalling. More, it’s that sharing every one of these doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. On the other hand, if I really want to use this as my main social media, gotta do something.
